What is in a Name That Makes it Popular?

Do you sometimes ever wonder…what is in name? And what is it in that name that makes it to be so popular! Is it just enough to go by a given name or is there something else?

I know of a place called Nyapara Ibere — Don’t even bother searching it on google! — Google does not know it exists yet. Alright “google it”, I told you so!

In 2008, the most popular baby boy name on baby.com was AIDAN while AVA was the most popular baby girl name. Now did you know that Aidan, Aiden and Aden are all alternate name for the other? — That they are all spellings of the same name.

Forbes listed Oprah Winfrey on top of the celebrity list. Barack Obama probably is the most powerful man on earth by virtue of being the president of the United States of America. And on yahoo questions , Shakespeare was voted as the most famous history name.

So really;

What is in a name?

That is the same question that Shakespeare asked in Romeo and Juliet.

As you ponder on that.

Let us relate it to your web site.

Your domain name means quite a lot.

As we very well know, a domain name is associated with an IP address, a numeric identifier that computers and network components use to connect a browser to a web site.

Now, I hope that you do know that it’s not mandatory that your site has a domain name. It is mandatory though to have an IP address. If you want you to, instead of using a domain name you can instead direct visitors to your website using an IP address.

But given our human nature, that can quickly generate difficulties. Just imagine telling your visitors to visit 64.233.167.99 or maybe 216.109.112.135 (If you are curious just type that and see what pops up)

what is in a name In the early days of the Internet, domain names were chosen carefully in order to help people remember the URL or make it easier for someone to type the name.

But that was then,

In the present world, With hotspots on a page, great search engines, social networking and other contemporary tools, the qualities of a good domain name that were a must then, really are not as important now.

If you think I’m joking let me ask you about your best friend, the one you call twice a day. Do you know your best friends cell phone number off head? I probably think you don’t! Why because you saved his or her numbers to your contacts long time ago. Now all that you do is get the name you saved it under and press dial.

That is what bookmarking, social sites and RSS are taking us.

From a marketing perspective, it still helps to have a good name. It’s still beneficial to have a site called ‘CheapTV.com’ if what you are selling is a selection of inexpensive Television sets.

Now someone doing the same business as you but using a domain name like ‘InexpensiveElectronicVisualDisplayDevices.com’ may find it hard to promote his business.

From my own experience having a good name can certainly help. The name you choose then may have an effect as to how much traffic your site gets especially during it’s initial stages of growth.

If you have a bad name like mine do not give up, with time and with a bit of extra hard work and marketing coupled with good quality information, products or services that people want, word do go around, soon or later.

But really if you are starting out,

why work harder if you can be able to secure a good domain name now?

As a closing thought, Love them or hate them, the Google company chose well. Their choice of name is a perfect response to Shakespeare question above “what is in a name?”

Of course, the fact is that – there are millions of web sites around the world that have awkward names. That maybe, because the truth is that you don’t necessarily get the name of your first choice.

Not all is lost. You can turn a name to something big.

Celebrities, famous people and household names we have come to know, love and hate did not just happen. A little bit of digging will reveal that in most cases it’s thorough hard work, focus and persistent that brought about such fame.

A not so good domain name should not stop you from accomplishing your dreams, that is why I know soon or later google is going to index Nyapara Ibere, words do get around, don’t they? — More on what is in a name here
