Are Good Domain Names Really that Important?
Your domain name is the .com, .net, .org or some other type of name that people search in order to arrive on your website. DomainNames.nikenya.com is the name of my blog.
Jake Weinbaum, who created Disney's go.com, paid 7.5 million along with a few investors for the domain name Business.com in 1999. Their intention was to turn it into a showcase B2B website.
Per their own press releases, they met their goal. Yes, this is a wonderful domain name. It is short, tells you what the company is about and is easy to memorize. There is some originality present, but is it worth $7.5 million? This money could have purchased plenty of advertising for another name for only ten dollars, two hundred dollars or even three hundred grand.
For fifteen years,
The first half a million that is made is amortized for the domain name.
That money could have gone towards an awesome affiliate program, tons of banner and PPC promotions and a sweet Lexus lease for Mr. Weinbaum.
However, a Lexus is probably the last thing that Mr. Weinbaum needs.
The Business.com issue has started a trend of domain name speculation that is totally mind blowing. People are trying to "buy good domain names", left and right, and then hope to sell them off to excited business owners who have goals of becoming very wealthy.
Since I am an extreme capitalist, I am can go both ways when it comes to domain name speculation. I want to be one of those people making money by snatching up all of the good domain names that are available. But on the other hand, I am disappointed with the coolness of commerce that is happening while people are negotiating with these domain name owners to obtain the best names.
So, if I peruse the top fifty sites on Alexa, those sites have good domain names that would be simple to memorize, right? Nope, this is not the case. I would have to say that only a few of those domain names, are simple to memorize and tells what the website is all about. Just a few.
I have been told that these so-called broad and descriptive good domain names are worth so much because people are just typing the domain names into the browser address bar instead of searching via the search engines.
This is a total urban legend.
"It does not matter how wonderful your good domain names are if the materials and content in your website is terrible and your first time visitor won't want to return back." In other words, buying "good domain names" is the starting point for an interesting journey as far as internet business is concerned and not an end per se!
I do not believe that anyone that is searching for data on a specific company would actually key in www.business.com. In addition, if I looked at the top fifty sites on Alexa, there would only be just a few of them that are simple to memorize and actually have unique and good domain names that indicates what the website is about.
How many people do you think really key in the address bar as an alternative to utilizing the search engines? I never found an answer, but Jupiter Media claims that sixty four percent of people searching for information utilize a search engine. This means that thirty six percent utilize some other kind of search process other than search engines.
1.) Domain Names Search
Search for your good domain names here
2.) Buy Good Domain Names
Lock, secure and protect your domain names
The reason that I do not believe that people do not use their address bars to search for information is because:
Back in November, out of all the people that utilized search engines, forty three percent of these people searched for well known websites such as Ebay.
Simply put, instead of keying in http://www.ebay.com, these people did a search and "Googled" Ebay and then opened up one of the search results.
That discovery was really funny, but also very easy to believe.
So, what does all of this really mean? The facts indicate that in terms of getting a person to a site for the first time, everybody begins in the same boat. If your "unique domain name" can get only a small fraction of people to use their address bar to get to your website and not the search engines, then maybe it is more valuable than someone who cannot.

Below is a list of 11 popular domain names sold in the most recent years, according to Zetetic:
- 2006- 14 million for sex.com
- 1999- 7.5 million for business.com
- 2003- 5.5 million for casino.com
- 2002- 5 million for asseenontv.com
- 1999- 5 million for korea.com
- 1996- 3.5 million for worldwideweb.com
- 1999- 3.3 million for altavista.com
- 1999-3.3 million for wine.com
- 1999 -3 million for eshow.com
- 1999- 3 million for loans.com
- 2004- 2.7 million for creditcards.com
Good Domain Names Rock!
All of these except for eshow.com should get a lot of traffic via the address bar. This is because when people utilize the address bar, they will type in names that provide a lot of description.
As you can see, eshow.com is not that descriptive. For example, if I am searching for anything that concerns sex, I will just key in sex.com.
What blows me away is the ROI.
If you sell anything on asseenontv.com that gives you a $25 profit, you will have to sell about 200k George Foreman grills just to afford your domain name. It also occurred to me that if you dish out 12k for sex.com, the free publicity that you get would probably be priced over a million dollars.
So, now everybody has visions of wealth in their future and are convinced that they can earn a fortune by selling their inventory of good available domain names. For instance below is just a few examples of asking prices for good domain names that were listed on eBay:
Why should all of this be important to you? Well, there are both pros and cons for this situation. Remember when I explained that everybody begins in the same boat? This is the pro. You can pick very good domain names, craft some great content, use SEO, purchase keywords, exchange links and you will have a good opportunity for bringing traffic to your website for an original visit.
Since the majority of your visitors are arriving due to a search engine, they really won't see your domain name until they arrive on the website. Your good domain names means absolutely nothing to most of the people that utilize the search engines. Sad but it's the truth.
One final note and that is if you are convinced that being at the top of the search engine results has a higher importance than someone keying your domain name directly into the address bar, then snatch up yourkeyword.cc or yourkeyword.mobi and yourkeyword.to. And all other available domain name extensions.
You may be on to something.
I have done it in the past. I even made the suggestion to other people.
Securing your good domain names is not that hard, really!
When someone arrives on your site, the domain name just has to be easy to remember so that they will utilize it again to come back to your website in the future. But then again, if they forget it, they can always just Google you again. I happen to encounter this same thing each day.
So, should you waste your time and purchase a domain name that you perceive to be a "good domain name"? I can't really say. But, after all, I did manage to buy this one. I have been given honorable mention in the Domain Name News.
I purchased this domain name because I truly liked it.
I have never paid anymore than a few hundred dollars for my choice of "good domain names" and I own quite a sizable number of good domain names. I would most definitely think of my own good domain names ideas before I purchase anyone else's.
