Preparation is key to achieving smooth domain name transfer.
But believe me,
Make sure that you know exactly what you want to do before you log into your control panel and initiate a transfer or call your host help-line number and request a domain transfer.
For instance do:
- You want to change the registrar of record for the domain name.
- You want to transfer the domain name to different servers.
Given the above two Scenarios about domain name transfer...
The first one will take a domain name registered with a given registrar and will then transfer or move the domain name to another registrar.
It has nothing to do with your website, your email or your DNS.
The second domain name transfer request on the other hand deals with your DNS, (Domain Name Servers) and has a direct consequence to how your website is displayed on the internet. Read here how domain names changes affects you.
Domain Name Transfer Requirement
Some of the requirements you need to have before you initiate a domain name transfer are:
- Your domain name should be unlocked (See link below).
- Your domain name should be a valid domain (not expired one).
- Some places will require that you have an authorization code from your registrar company.
- Your domain should be at least 60 days old with your current registrar before initiating a domain name transfer.
Bear in mind that you're the one to start the domain name transfer process by contacting the gaining registrar.
Domain Name Transfer – The Gaining Registrar
This is simply the company that you want to transfer your domain name to. It is the only company that can initiate a domain name transfer.
You're supposed to give it the required information in order for it to start the domain name transfer process. Make sure the information you give is accurate. Once you do this it will then contact your current domain name registrar.
The company is charged with the responsibility of contacting the correct person (admin contact) and getting their explicit approval for the domain name transfer by ICANN.
Getting Ready for a Domain Name Transfer
Be sure that you have all the details of the other party e.g. full name, address, email account and phone number. Domain name transfer is not a one party's activity, the other party will be contacted for their consent and acceptance for this transaction.
As a procedure for domain name transfer, several emails with specific instructions will be sent by both registrars to both the requester and the old owner that need to be followed in a timely manner.
Be aware of the time frame needed to process the domain name transfer.
There are rules and regulations governing locked, pending delete, in redemption, inactive or active domains. For more information visit ICANN website.
